Opening and Closing of Loops

You Will Always Use This Technique


Wire jewelry instructions... this is one of the first techniques you need to use as a beginner...
and, it's a technique that you will keep on using. You will just get better and better at it.



You can use this technique for opening and closing...
  • jump rings,
  • the loop in earwires and
  • the loop on eye pins...
  • anywhere where you have an open-end loop that you want to open and close.

Instructions... here we go...
Grap the loop with two pliers. I use my flat nose pliers and chain nose pliers.

Right Handed's...
  1. Hold the chain-nose pliers in your right hand and
  2. Hold the flat-nose pliers in your left hand.
  3. Use the flat-nose pliers to steady the left side of the jump ring.
  4. Use the chain-nose pliers to open and close the other end.
  5. This is more a twist movement than a pull movement.

Left Handed's...

Wire Jewelry Instructions 1... Grap the loop with two pliers... left handed
  1. Hold the chain-nose pliers in your left hand (dominant) and
  2. Hold the flat-nose pliers in your right hand.
  3. Use the flat-nose pliers to steady the right side of the jump ring.
  4. Use the chain-nose pliers to open and close the other end.
  5. This is more a twist movement than a pull movement.

    For Left and Right Handed


    Ideally this process should leave the jump ring in perfect condition and the wire without any marks. However, when you are a beginner your first aim is to close the loop properly. Then you also want your loop to keep its original shape.
